“Memento Mori -Eros and Thanatos-“
In response to a “theme” given by Hiroshi SUGIMOTO, the curator of this show, all the members of Shirokane Art Complex from contemporary art to antiques will elaborate individual presentations of artworks by their own and invited artists. The pieces selected in pursuit of an answer to Sugimoto will not only reveal the cling of Eros and Thanatos, but also intend to raise this eternal problem of love and death towards the visitors.
The exhibition at YAMAMOTO GENDAI will include drawings and a model for “ANGER from the Bottom”, a collaborative large-scale installation by Kenji YANOBE and Beat Takeshi, and “Ecstatic Generator” by Hiroshi SUGIMOTO. Also on view will be Beat Takeshi’s “See-through Gymnastic Vault,” in which one may find the purity of a device to see the originating point of our life, as well as artistic quality that leads back to the works of Duchamp, who caused a controversy for his “Given: 1 The Waterfall, 2: The illuminating Gas.” Following the theme of “Memento Mori”, we will exhibit a 1971 series of photographs and drawings by Hermann NITSCH, the extraordinary figure of Wiener Aktionismus. New works by Motohiko ODANI will be on view from April 24.
